About the Porsche 914
In the 1960s, Porsche was in financial difficulties and produced only one model of car. Therefore, it needed to produce cheaper cars to attract more buyers. Knowing that Volkswagen was having success with its new generation of cheap cars, Porsche acquired 49 % of Volkswagen's stock in 1969. The struggling German company then gained access to the Audi product line, developed by Audi, which was also manufactured by Volkswagen. An agreement between Volkswagen and Porsche in April 1970 led to the creation of a new company, Porsche-Volkswagen GmbH. This new subsidiary undertook all work related to the 914 project, with plans for a mid-engine sports car in mind. The 914 would share its engine and some other elements with other manufacturers. This is the story behind the birth of this automotive myth.
